Statement on AI use - 11/02/2025
My own use
Generative AI (Music)
None of my musical work is, has been, or will be created using generative AI tools.
My work does not include — in whole or in part — any AI-generated or AI-approximated performance, sound, or composition.
All sound used in my work is:
-
Performed and recorded by myself,
-
Performed and recorded by a credited collaborator, or
-
Derived from properly licensed sample libraries.
Generative AI (Language)
All lyrics across my personal and collaborative projects are written entirely by me or credited human collaborators.
No part of my video essay scripts is generated by AI tools.
I may use language-based AI systems as research support tools (for example, for information gathering, organisational assistance, or strategic planning). These tools are not used to generate creative written content.
Generative AI (Images and Video)
None of my video essay thumbnails or any visual aspect of my repertoire are generated by genAI tools.
In 2022 when generative AI tools were in their infancy and their ethical use cases still nebulous and changing, I used an AI-generated image for album artwork content on my album of the same year. This is the single instance of generative AI in my repertoire and will be replaced as soon as a commission and collaborator are finalised.
Collaborators' use
It's my strong preference to work with collaborators who wish to maintain a traditional, human-centred creative process. While industry practices are shifting and generative AI will inevitably be used more often in Pre and Post Production (VFX, Temp Music, etc.) it's my prerequisite that my collaborators' works are free from any AI-generated performances or AI-simulated artistic content — unless the project explicitly engages critically with generative AI as its subject matter.
Signed,
Elliot Nicklin
